Nielsen's 10 Heuristics Audit

60 minEach product

Format: Systematically evaluate an app using Jakob Nielsen's 10 usability heuristics.

The 10 Heuristics:

  1. Visibility of system status (Does the user know what's happening?)
  2. Match between system and the real world (Can the user understand the language and concepts?)
  3. User control and freedom (Can you undo? Is there an exit button?)
  4. Consistency and standards (Does the same thing behave the same way in different places?)
  5. Error prevention (Can the design itself prevent errors?)
  6. Recognition rather than recall (Does the user need to remember anything, or can they recognize it on sight?)
  7. Flexibility and efficiency of use (Can both beginners and experts use it? Are there shortcuts?)
  8. Aesthetic and minimalist design (Is there unnecessary information?)
  9. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors (Are error messages helpful?)
  10. Help and documentation (Can you find help when you need it?)

Steps: Pick an app you use daily. For each heuristic, find one example where it's done well and one where it's done poorly.
